Selecting, Empowering, and Setting Goals with Middle Leaders

These webinars are based on my book Hidden in Plain Sight: Realizing the Full Potential of Middle Leaders. I wrote this book to provide guidance to senior leaders to recruit and empower middle leaders, as well as help middle leaders understand their role and provide practical strategies to realize their purpose.

How to Select Middle Leaders?

This webinar includes strategies for selecting middle leaders. Michael will not only introduce the questions that Senior Leaders need to consider when assigning Grade Level, Department and Coordinator positions, but also includes the Behavioural Competency questions that prospective candidates need to be asked. This webinar will also address how to develop a culture that Middle Leaders can be successful in, and specifically what Senior Leaders can do to seed that culture.

This first webinar focuses on Senior Leaderships' role for selecting Middle Leaders, but is also important for current and aspiring Middle Leaders to ensure they are asking the right questions and setting the appropriate expectations for their role.

How to Empower Middle Leaders?

In this webinar Michael will identify how Senior Leaders can help pull teams from the silos that exist across the school. One of 3 strategies shared in this webinar will be guidance on how to establish a collaborative Middle Leadership team. A high functioning Middle Leadership team is essential in ensuring alignment from the top to the bottom. Alignment with the school’s guiding statements and strategic objectives will be the primary focus of this webinar, and in particular Senior Leaderships role for clearly stating the expected outcomes and Middle Leaderships role for identifying the outputs their teams can produce to achieve the desired outcome.

Lastly, Michael will address the reality that not all teams in a school are equal. Some will be higher functioning than others and for this fact the expectation for each team should be different. These differences are often the result of teams being in different stages of development. The last strategy Michael shares in this webinar will be for Middle Leaders, and specifically how they can setup ‘sandbox’ for their teams to collaborate effectively in.

How to Set Goals with Middle Leaders?

By this time of year schools have finalized their placements for the Grade Level, Department Head and Coordinator positions. Although this school year may be quickly coming to a close, leadership across the school need to begin planning for the next school year.

This webinar guides Senior and Middle Leaders on how to use the remaining time of this year to set expectations for the next school year. These expectations are informed by each Middle Leader conducting a Team Health Check for their team and using feedback from the team to identify the processes and behaviours that will improve team performance in the next school year.

Lastly, Middle Leaders should be ending the school year with a clear sense of purpose for the next school year and use the break for reflection on what success will look like in the coming school year and identify the antecedents for that success. This webinar provides Middle Leaders with step-by-step guidance on how to prepare for the year ahead.

Leading Teams Virtually

The Covid-19 pandemic is challenging schools in ways many of us have never experienced before. Students, teachers and leaders are all working in isolation limited to a medium of communication and collaboration most are unfamiliar with and some may not even be able to access. So, how can we respond effectively to the challenges presented to us on a daily basis, help our students access the curriculum and reassure our communities that everything will be ok?

Leading teams virtually is not a new phenomena. There are many proven technologies and strategies for leading in this medium. Companies have been doing it for decades as they went global and there is ample leadership literature providing step-by-step guidance on how to capacity build teams to collaborate effectively when having to meet virtually. You don’t need to navigate this crisis alone. Use this as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of teams and begin capacity building them now.

In this 45-minute presentation, Michael Iannini will provide guidance on how to lead a team virtually and provide practical tips for how to facilitate a virtual meeting. Many of these tips can also be applied to teaching virtually.
